Updates & Root

System updates will be pushed to the device through the normal Google update process. NVIDIA will provide frequent OS updates for SHIELD keeping users current with the latest releases from Google. Users can also apply OS updates on their own by unlocking the bootloader, though this may void your warranty.

SHIELD provides full support for 802.11a/b/g/n and all standard 802.11 protocols (WEP, WPA, WPA2, PSK, 802.1x EAP).

High Fidelity, Powerful Speakers

SHIELD has integrated stereo speakers with a custom, bass reflex, tuned port audio system that provides fidelity and dynamic range never before experienced on a handheld device. SHIELD also has a 3.5mm stereo headphone/mic jack, and supports 8-channel PCM audio over HDMI. This means you can use your combination headphone/microphone headsets like the Astro A40 and Apple headphones for VOIP communications on SHIELD.

SHIELD can also access Android apps such as Hulu, Play Movies, and Slacker Radio, so users can enjoy their movies and music anywhere without expensive, clumsy wired or wireless speakers.

The depth of the SHIELD enclosure allows for the speakers to be ported; put inside a box/enclosure that makes for a fuller sound. Porting provides a much better low end response providing a unique and dynamic audio experience for a device in its class.

The battery in SHIELD is comprised of 3 cells with a combined rating of 28.8-watt-hours.

SHIELD is built for extended gameplay and delivers 4-5 hours of gameplay for Tegra 4 optimised games and up to 10 hours of gameplay for typical Android games. Users can play HD quality movies for up to 15 hours, and music playback for up to 40 hours.


SHIELD can be charged through the included micro-USB power adapter. Although most standard micro USB adapters and USB ports can be used, we recommend the included 2A power adapter for optimum charge time and performance. Note that third-party charging adapters and docking stations will be available.



NVIDIA SHIELD Input-Output ports
Full I/O support including 802.11n 2x2 MIMO Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0, USB 2.0, HDMI, and a 3.5mm headphone/mic jack enables connection to your favorite devices and peripherals.

Bluetooth Support

SHIELD fully supports streaming audio over A2DP to Bluetooth headsets, headphones, and other audio devices. Users can also establish a Bluetooth connection with other SHIELD users and play multi-player games like Virtua Tennis.

USB Support

SHIELD supports a variety of USB devices, including power adapters, headphones, speakers, and connection to other devices such as a PC for file transfer. The micro-USB port is used for both power and data. While SHIELD doesn't have an Ethernet port, it is possible to use a third party micro-USB to Ethernet adapter to connect SHIELD to the Internet without the use of Wi-Fi.

MicroSD Slot

You can add more storage to SHIELD via the microSD expansion slot (Secure Digital Extended Capacity – SDXC) on the back of the device.

KitKat significantly changes the way applications are allowed to use SD cards.  If you use an SD card to store data, please read here before installing this update.

Preparing The SD Card

  • 32GB (or less) microSD cards - SHIELD supports FAT32 data format. Most microSD cards that are 32GB or less are already formatted as FAT32. If the memory card is not formatted, format to FAT32, using your PC or Mac computer.
  • 64GB (or higher) microSD cards - Android does not support the exFAT file system out-of-the-box. Because the standard FAT32 file system does NOT support partitions greater than 32GB by default, 64GB cards come pre-formatted as exFAT. If you want to use a 64GB microSD with Shield, it has to be converted to a file system format that is supported by stock Android, which in this case is NTFS. This can be done using a PC.

How-To Move to SD Card

Navigate to the application that you want to move by going to Settings > Apps > Select App

HDMI & Miracast Support

SHIELD users can now hide the Android status bar, increasing screen space and creating a fullscreen experience.

To enable the Hide status bar feature, navigate to the Display menu in the Settings screen.

System Requirements for GAMESTREAM


The basic requirements for PC Game Streaming are a Wi-Fi router and a modern gaming PC with a GeForce GTX 650 or higher desktop GPU.

Note: With the April 2014 Software Update, or newer installed, you can now use a GeForce powered notebook to GAMESTREAM your game library to your SHIELD. This feature is in BETA.

System Requirements for GAMESTREAM

The detailed requirements are:

  • GPU:

    • Desktop: GeForce GTX 650 or higher desktop GPU
    • Notebook (BETA): GeForce GTX 800M, GTX 700M, and select (Kepler-based) GTX 600M GPUs

  • CPU: Intel Core i3-2100 3.1GHz or AMD Athlon II X4 630 2.8GHz or higher
  • System Memory: 4GB or higher
  • OS: Windows 8 or Windows 7
  • Software:

  • Routers: 802.11a/g router (minimum). 802.11n dual band router (recommended). SHIELD should be connected at 5GHz to take advantage of full gaming optimisations in GAMESTREAM mode.

NVIDIA uses the H.264 encoder built into GeForce GTX 650 or higher desktop GPUs and GeForce GTX Kepler and Maxwell notebooks, along with efficient wireless streaming software protocol integrated into GeForce Experience, to stream games from the PC to SHIELD over the user's home Wi-Fi network with ultra-low latency. Gamers then use SHIELD as the controller and display for their favourite PC games, as well as for Steam Big Picture.

In addition to streaming the game, NVIDIA also configures PC games for streaming using GeForce Experience to deliver a seamless out of the box experience. There are three key activities involved here:

  • Generating optimal game settings for streaming games from the PC to SHIELD
  • We use our GeForce Experience servers to determine the best quality settings based on the user's CPU and GPU, and target higher frame rates than 'normal' optimal settings to ensure the lowest latency gaming experience. These settings are automatically applied when the game is launched so gamers don't have to worry about configuring these settings themselves.

  • Enabling controller support in games
  • This avoids gamers having to manually configure controller support in the game – it 'just works' out of the box.

  • Optimising the game launch process
  • This is important so that gamers can get into the game as quickly and seamlessly as possible, without hitting launchers or other 2 foot UI interactions that can be difficult to interface with a controller.

Steam Big Picture


Big Picture shows up as a selection in the list of SHIELD-optimised games. Launching it gives you access to your Steam games – both supported and unsupported – plus the Steam Store and all the Steam community features. Supported games are recommended for the best, optimised streaming experience – the latest list of supported games can be found on SHIELD.nvidia.com starting at launch.

Unsupported games may work if they have native controller support, but will not be optimised for streaming and may have other streaming compatibility issues.

How To Configure GAMESTREAM


Setting up your PC:

1. Connect both SHIELD and PC to the same Wi-Fi-N router.

  • For best performance, it is recommended that the PC is connected via Ethernet to the router, and the SHIELD is connected to the router on the 5G channel.

2. Install GeForce driver 337.50 Beta or higher from http://www.geforce.co.uk/drivers.

3. Launch GeForce Experience 2.0 or newer (included in the driver download).

5. On the My Rig tab in GeForce Experience, confirm that your PC meets the hardware requirements for game streaming.

6.Install your favourite SHIELD compatible games and make sure you have the latest version of Steam installed to be able to play games through Steam Big Picture.

7. Log into Steam or Origin and make sure that the games you want to stream have been installed and previously launched once (with any patches/etc applied) from the PC.

8. Press the SHIELD button on your SHIELD to launch the TegraZone app and select the “My PC Games” tab. Find the available PCs on the network from which to stream games to SHIELD.


9. Select your PC to pair with from the list of available PCs. A pin code will pop up on the SHIELD screen. This pin allows for a more secure and unique connection to the particular PC. This also allows you to connect to more than one PC from the same SHIELD.


10. A one-time pairing pop-up will appear on your PC. Enter the pin code from the SHIELD and click on the Connect button in the pop-up.

11. You will now see a list of supported PC games that are available to stream from your PC.

12. Select a supported game from the list and press the A button to play.

Using On-Screen GAMESTREAM Controls


When a game is launched, the following help message is displayed for accessing on-screen controls. These controls allow users to interact with game dialogs to make GAMESTREAM a better experience on SHIELD.

To access on-screen controls, use a two-finger tap. Alternatively, you can long-press the Start button.

The on-screen controls will bring up a menu screen with four options: Keyboard, Home, Help, and Quit.

If you need to input information into a dialog, use the Keyboard selection.

Most of the touch navigation options are straightforward. Clicking Help will display the full list of available touch interactions.

The Help button will display the touch interaction information that can be used to interact with PC games on the SHIELD screen. If you touch the right arrow you will see controller interaction information as well.

Streaming Games That Are Not GAMESTREAM-Ready


NVIDIA officially supports GAMESTREAM for over 100 games, but GeForce Experience allows users to manually add and stream nearly any game. Manage your list of manually added games in GeForce Experience under the GAMESTREAM section of the “Preferences” tab in GeForce Experience.

1. Open GeForce Experience and navigate to the “Preferences” tab and select “GAMESTREAM” from the menu on the left. You will see the following menu that will allow you to add any application to the SHIELD GAMESTREAM section of the TegraZone app on SHIELD.

2. Drag and drop a shortcut to your favorite game or click on the “+” sign to search your PC for the exe of the application you would like to add to the GAMESTREAM list on SHIELD.

3. You can then click the “pencil” icon to edit the name and box art of the applications in your list.

4. Once you have added applications into the list, they will appear on your SHIELD’s GAMESTREAM list and can be launched just like any other app. Note that NVIDIA does not configure optimal settings for manually added games, so you may need to adjust in-game settings manually for the best experience.

Tip: You can even use this feature to stream your entire PC desktop. To do so, add a shortcut to Windows’ Remote Desktop Connection app (c:\windows\system32\mstsc.exe) in GeForce Experience, then select the newly added Remote Desktop tile from SHIELD’s My PC Games tab. From here, you have access to your entire desktop.

Tips For Interacting With Unsupported Games


  • SHIELD is a touch screen device that uses mouse emulation for streaming. Any time the user is in a situation where using the mouse would bypass a menu or in game option that the controller will not operate, simply use the touch screen as the mouse.

  • SHIELD has a full virtual keyboard built into the touch screen interface. As with the mouse, if there is a situation that requires a keyboard instead of the controller, use the virtual keyboard by tapping two fingers on the touch screen and tapping the keyboard icon that appears.

While Streaming a PC game, you can use the Pinch to Zoom and Pan functions to better navigate menus or other in game elements that are hard to see. Simply pinch or expand with two fingers to zoom and use a two finger swipe to pan around while zoomed.



Remote GAMESTREAM is a new feature that will allow you to stream games from your PC to your SHIELD outside of your local WiFi network. To set up remote GAMESTREAM with your PC and SHIELD follow the steps below.

1. Make sure your PC has Network discovery enabled. Go to Control Panel --> Network and Sharing Center --> Change advanced sharing settings --> select ‘Turn on network discovery’.

2. For routers that support UPNP Port Forwarding and have it enabled, GeForce Experience automatically opens the proper ports for remote connection – you can move to step 3. However, if your router does not support UPNP or does not allow automatic forwarding of all the below ports, you will need to manually forward the following ports from your router administration panel:

TCP: 35043, 47991, 47995, 47996, 47989, 47984
UDP: 7, 9, 47999, 47992, 47998, 47989, 48000

Note: To find more information on port forwarding for your specific router, you can visit a website like http://portforward.com/.

3. Pair your PC and SHIELD normally on a local Wi-Fi connection (or Ethernet) using the instructions in the GAMESTREAM section of this guide.

4. Take your SHIELD with you on the go and connect it to a robust Wi-Fi connection. When you open the “My PC Games” menu in TegraZone, launch a game from the list of available games to initiate a connection to your remote PC. Your SHIELD will automatically look for your PC and connect using the current internet connection.



  • Remote GAMESTREAM requires a minimum upload and download bandwidth speeds of 5Mbps. Streaming experience may vary depending on the quality of your Internet. For best experience, connect SHIELD to a 5Ghz router while streaming remotely.
  • Remote GAMESTREAM can be optimised by manually lowering your streaming bitrate for Wi-Fi. Doing this will reduce your image quality but will reduce latency. Adjust the bitrate manually to find the sweet spot for your configuration. You can do this by accessing the Advanced GAMESTREAM menu in Tegrazone. Please refer to the Advanced GAMESTREAM Features section of this guide for more information.
  • The following routers from our recommended router list will need manual port forwarding for Remote GAMESTREAM to function properly.
    • ASUS RT-AC66U -> ports 7 and 9
    • ASUS RT-AC68U -> ports 7 and 9
    • ASUS RT-N56U -> ports 7 and 9
    • ASUS RT-N66U -> ports 7 and 9
    • Netgear R6300 -> port 47989
    • Buffalo Airstation Extreme 1750 -> may need all ports forwarded manually
    • Buffalo Airstation Extreme 1200 -> may need all ports forwarded manually
    • D-Link DIR-5500 -> may need all ports forwarded manually

  • If you have problems connecting to your PC remotely, try manually forwarding all the following ports:
    • TCP: 35043, 47991, 47995, 47996, 47989, 47984
    • UDP: 7, 9, 47999, 47992, 47998, 47989, 48000

  • When you pair your SHIELD to your GeForce PC locally, GeForce Experience records your external IP address and use this to connect the SHIELD to the PC when you are remote. If your external IP address changes (i.e. due to dynamic IP address, etc), SHIELD won’t be able to find your PC. You will either need to re-pair locally, or manually enter the new IP address in order to reconnect remotely. Static IP addresses and dynamic DNS can help here.

Wake on LAN & Remote Log-In


Wake on LAN is a feature that will allow you to wake up your PC on your local network when you want to use GAMESTREAM on SHIELD. You no longer need to wake your PC and log-in manually to be able to stream your favorite games. To use Wake on LAN and Remote Log-In:

1. Hit the SHIELD button to open TegraZone and navigate to the “My PC Games” tab to view the games installed on your paired PCs.

2. When you select a game that you want to launch and start streaming, you will be notified that your PC is asleep and will be woken up.

3. Click “Continue” to wake the PC and launch the game. If your PC has a Windows password, you will be taken to the login screen where you can enter your password remotely. Use the two finger menu to bring up the virtual keyboard to enter your password.

4. One you have entered your password, your PC will launch the selected application and begin streaming.

There are several important setup requirements for Wake on LAN:

1. Your motherboard and router must both support Wake on LAN. Depending on the motherboard, you may need to enable Wake on LAN in your motherboard SBIOS or the Device Manager settings for your Ethernet Adapter.

  • Depending on your PC and OS, you may need to make sure your PC only wakes up from magic packets, otherwise your PC make wake up inadvertently.
  • Go to Device Manager --> Network adapters --> [Your Ethernet adapter, e.g. Intel] --> Power Management, and check the options ‘Allow this device to wake the computer’ and ‘Only allow a magic packet to wake the computer’.

2. Your PC must be connected to your router via Ethernet.

3. Your PC must be powered on and in sleep or hibernate mode. Wake on LAN is not supported for PCs that are shut down.

4.To wake up your PC while outside your Local Area Network, you may need to manually open ports depending on your router. See the Remote GAMESTREAM section for more details.

Advanced GAMESTREAM Features


In the TegraZone app under “Settings” you can access some of the advanced features available to fine tune your GAMESTREAM experience. To access these features, make sure you already have a PC paired. In the advanced settings menu, you can manually adjust streaming bit rates, frame rates and elect to not apply Optimal Settings for each game in your streaming list. This provides more control to the user to fine tune your streaming experience.

1.Open the TegraZone app and navigate to the settings menus in the lower left hand corner.

2. Once in the settings menu, you can access the GAMESTREAM PCs menu.

3. Here you can see all of the different PCs you have paired to your SHIELD and their current status. In the upper right corner you can access the “Advanced” menu.

4. In the “Advanced” menu you can select “Streaming Quality” to manually change the bitrate at which you stream is delivered both from a Wi-Fi connection and from a wired Ethernet connection. You can also change the target frame rate that the SHIELD will deliver. This provides a lot of flexibility to the power user in how they stream.

5. Also in the ‘Advanced” menu in the Optimised Game Settings menu where you can manually disable OPS (Optimal Playability Settings) for a particular game. This allows the user to disable the automatic settings we apply to allow you tailor specific in game settings for each game. You can also globally disable or enable OPS for a particular PC that you have paired to your SHIELD.

6. The GAMESTREAM menu also allows you to manually add a PC using the specific IP address of that particular PC. This can be an address on your local network (LAN) or an external IP (WAN) address. On the GAMESTREAM PCs menu you can click the “+” button to manually add a PC. Enter the IP address to search that address for a GeForce PC. This will then add this PC to your GAMESTREAM PCs menu.

Tips and Tricks


  • We recommend launching your games at least once on the PC before launching through SHIELD to install all of the prerequisites (VC Redists, DirectX, etc) and set up all DRM features (Games For Windows Live, SocialClub, etc).
  • If you do not see your PC on the server list on your SHIELD, or cannot connect to your PC from SHIELD:
    • Verify that both SHIELD and the PC are connected to the same Wi-Fi router.
    • Be sure the latest GeForce Experience software is loaded and running on the PC, and that your Steam account is logged in if streaming Steam games supported by GeForce Experience.
    • Verify that your PC meets the system requirements using the My Rig tab in GeForce Experience
    • Try manually adding your PC via IP address (refer to Advanced Settings)

  • If you do not see a pairing request pop-up:
    • In GeForce Experience, press the Forget all devices button in the Preferences --> GAMESTREAM tab
  • If any of the above steps do not work, trying rebooting the SHIELD and the PC, or notebook.

NVIDIA GAMESTREAM technology works exactly like desktop GAMESTREAM, and is compatible with GeForce GTX 800M, GTX 700M, and select GTX 600M GPUs installed in some of today’s best gaming notebooks.

The full list of supported GTX GPUs for notebook is: 880M, 870M, 860M, 850M, 780M, 770M, 765M, 680M, 675MX, 670MX, and 660M.

To try out this new feature, please make sure you have the 337.50 beta driver, or newer, and GeForce Experience 2.0 or newer on your notebook.


Game on Your Big Screen

Console Mode transforms your portable SHIELD into a full living room gaming and entertainment experience on your big-screen TV. Play Android games, browse the web and watch your favourite movies. Also, PC games can be streamed in Console Mode with GAMESTREAM.

Console Mode has been optimised to work and play with a number of controllers including Nyko’s PlayPad Pro wireless Bluetooth controller. Console Mode now works with a selection of Bluetooth keyboards and mice.

NVIDIA SHIELD Console Mode #1

Android games, applications, the menu, and web browsing play back at native 1080p at up to 60 frames per second. However, some Android games are not optimised for 1080p @ 60fps playback.

NVIDIA GAMESTREAM now enables you to experience your favourite PC games at up to 1080p, 60 frames per second in Console Mode.

The detailed requirements are:

  • Cable: Mini-HDMI to HDMI cable.
  • Controller: Bluetooth wireless controller. NVIDIA recommends the Nyko PlayPad Pro.
  • HDTV: An HDTV with HDMI support.
    NOTE: Please use the Gaming or Sports mode for the HDTV if it supports it to reduce input latency.

Connect the Nyko PlayPad Pro

The Nyko PlayPad Pro is a full sized wireless Bluetooth controller designed to work with SHIELD. In fact, it was designed in conjunction with NVIDIA and is compatible with numerous high-end mobile games optimized for Tegra-powered devices. It features dual analog sticks, d-pad, 4 face buttons, and left/right dual shoulder/trigger buttons.

1) Turn on the Nyko controller by long-holding the Home button on the Nyko PlayPad Pro for 5-10 seconds until the red light on top of the controller is flashing.

2) Make sure that the switch on the back of the Nyko PlayPad Pro is moved to the far left to controller mode.

3) Open the SHIELD Bluetooth settings and click Search for Devices to add the Nyko PlayPad Pro controller to pair it with SHIELD.

The Nyko PlayPad Pro will show as connected and will be ready to use when the Bluetooth symbol in the top-right of the screen turns blue (as shown in the picture above).

Depending on when your PlayPad Pro was manufactured, your controller may require a firmware update. Refer to the Nyko PlayPad Pro product page to download its wired update utility to update the Firmware through your PC or Mac.

Once this is complete, you can re-pair the PlayPad Pro to your SHIELD. If technical issues persist, please contact Nyko directly. They will assist you in updating or replacing the controller. For more details, refer to Nyko's Customer Support Page.

Configuring Console Mode

Configuring SHIELD for Console Mode is actually simple. Use the following instructions once you have connected your Bluetooth controller, keyboard, and mouse.

Connect SHIELD to the TV

Do this by connecting SHIELD to the TV using a Mini-HDMI to HDMI cable.

Launch Console Mode

Console Mode can be launched using the application icon or by inserting a Mini-HDMI cable into SHIELD. On the HDTV, the Console Mode prompt will pop up regardless if the lid is open or closed. If the lid is closed and SHIELD is in sleep mode, inserting the Mini-HDMI cable will wake it from sleep. If you remove the Mini-HDMI cable from SHIELD, you will get prompted to exit Console Mode.

NOTE: Every time you enter or exit Console Mode, it resets SHIELD.

In order to stream games in Console Mode at 1080p @ 60 FPS, your PC system must meet the following minimum requirements (NOTE: these requirements are slightly higher than the standard, 720p GAMESTREAM requirements):

  • HDTV: An HDTV with HDMI support.
    NOTE: Please use the Gaming or Sports mode for the HDTV if it supports it to reduce input latency.
  • GPU: GeForce™ GTX 660 or higher desktop GPU (Notebook GPUs are not supported at this time)
  • CPU: Intel Core i5 or higher, or AMD FX 6-Core or higher
  • Controller: Bluetooth wireless controller. NVIDIA recommends the Nyko PlayPad Pro.
  • Cable: Mini-HDMI to HDMI cable
  • Micro USB Ethernet Adapter: Connect a wired Ethernet cable from your router to your SHIELD.
  • NOTE: There are many different types of Micro USB Ethernet adapters available in the marketplace. The adapter must be a male Micro USB connector to a female Ethernet connector.

How to Configure GAMESTREAM at 1080p

Connect SHIELD to the TV

Connect SHIELD to the TV using a Mini-HDMI to HDMI cable.

Connect the Wired Ethernet Cable

1. Connect your wired Ethernet cable to your router.

2. Connect that cable to the Micro USB Ethernet adapter.
NOTE: A Micro USB Ethernet adapter can be used, but SHIELD cannot be charged with this type of adapter. To charge SHIELD while using Ethernet, a Micro USB Y-Cable with inputs for Micro USB power and full-size USB Ethernet will need to be used. Of course, a full-size USB2 to Ethernet adapter will needed in conjunction with the Y-Cable. See pictures below for pictures of these adapters.

3. Connect the Micro USB Ethernet adapter to your SHIELD.
NOTE: Wi-Fi on SHIELD will automatically be disabled when the Micro USB Ethernet adapter is working correctly.

Connecting the Cables

Connect the cables in the following order (the order is important!):

1. Plug in the SHIELD AC Adapter and USB Ethernet Adapter into the Micro USB Y-Cable.

2. Then plug the male Micro USB connector into SHIELD.

SHIELD is charged at a reduced current of 1.2A in this configuration.

Configuring your PC

Stream your game

Select a game from the list by tapping the game box art or by pressing “A” on the SHIELD controller. The game resolution will automatically change to 1080p if you launch an officially supported game.

“Shop” provides a curated list of games that just work great on SHIELD, and are available on Google Play. Selecting one of the games listed here will link you to the games page in the Google Play Store where you can purchase the game using your normal Google Play account – no need for a separate account! You can also search based on specific categories.


“News” is a new tab that will allow you to view SHIELD related news that can be read directly in the TegraZone app.

“My Android Games” is a simple way to access all of the Android games you have installed on your device. Install a game through the SHIELD Store and it will show up here in an icon format.

And while almost every touch-based game on Google Play was playable using SHIELD’s touchscreen, they weren’t able to take full advantage of SHIELD’s capabilities.

Gamepad Mapper addresses this issue by immediately expanding your library to 1000s of Android games by adding controller support to native touchscreen games. Gamepad Mapper includes auto mapping of the most popular Android games, giving gamers complete control of their favourite touch screen games, and the ability to share those custom gamepad mapping profiles with friends.

How Gamepad Mapper Works

Gamepad Mapper provides NVIDIA’s default profiles for hundreds of top Android games, making everything from “NBA Jam” to “Angry Birds” playable on SHIELD’s console-grade controller. Default profiles are automatically downloaded from the cloud for supported games so you can just launch your game and play.

Using Gamepad Mapper Gizmos

Gamepad Mapper is highly customisable, allowing gamers to create their own custom controls using the build-in tools or “gizmos”.

To access the Gamepad Mapper gizmos, long press the Start button while inside the game or long press the NVIDIA button and access the Gamepad Mapper from the SHIELD Power Menu.

Intuitive editing tool allows for easy personalisation and sharing of control mapping. A number of gizmos are included that allow for customisation of game controls.

Motion Sensor Gizmo

Gamepad Mapper now includes a gizmo that can map the motion sensor gyro inside of SHIELD to the right or left analog thumbstick for better accuracy in native motion-based controls.

To use this gizmo, open the Gamepad Mapper overlay by long pressing the Start button while inside a game.

Tap and hold the sensor gizmo and move it anywhere on the screen.

Move the desired thumbstick left and right to assign it to the gizmo. Once mapped, the placed gizmo will contain the letter corresponding to the selected thumbstick.

Analog Joystick Gizmos

Use the Gamepad Mapper software to map the left and right joysticks to the touch joysticks on the screen of the game. Do this by touching either of the joysticks, and then dragging them down so they are placed directly on top of the game’s touch joystick. Map the LS joystick over the joystick in the bottom-left of the game, and the RS joystick over the touch joystick in the bottom-right of the game.

Once the LS or RS joysticks have been dragged or placed, use the Y and A buttons to change the hot region size. Making LS and RS joysticks larger will make the movement on the screen larger. Long press it and select Move from the popup menu to adjust placement.

Improved Thumbstick Controls

Gamepad Mapper now includes better functionality for first person perspective games. For native touch based games, in order to “look around,” a user must swipe the screen in the direction they want to view. With this improved thumbstick control feature, a user can map the look around motion to either thumbstick.

Use the Gamepad Mapper software to map the SHIELD buttons to the screen regions of the game that you would press to control the game. Do this by touching the Gamepad Mapper button, and then dragging it down on the screen to cover the region of the game where you would typically touch it for control.

Once the button has been placed, simply press the button on the controller that you would like mapped. Long press the button and select Move from the popup menu to adjust placement of the button.

Cursor Gizmo

The cursor gizmo allows you to select an object inside a game. This is good for games like Angry Birds and Candy Crush. The cursor is actually tied to both a joystick and a button. To use this, drag and place the cursor *anywhere* on the screen, and then shake one of the LS or RS joysticks to be used as movement, and then press the key to be used as the cursor click.

Move the joystick that you would like to control the movement of the cursor on the screen. It will then be linked to the cursor that you just created. Then press a button on the SHIELD unit that you would like linked to the cursor; this will be the cursor click.

Once configured, it can be used to select an object in the game such as the slingshot in Angry Birds. You can then move the joystick back to set the trajectory of the bird, and release the button to let it fly.

"Accelerated Cursor" Option for Joystick Mouse Mode

Gamepad Mapper includes better cursor functionality for games that require navigation (e.g. menu selection) or cursor control (e.g. Angry Birds). There is an added feature that allows the cursor to remain at its location rather than reappearing in the center of the screen.

Map the Cursor gizmo to the game screen, using right analog stick and button of your choice (e.g. left shoulder button).

Gamepad Mapper also includes the ability to map gestures on the screen. This is for simple swiping functionality, or for engaging a boost in a racing game, or for zooming in and out of a screen. To use the gesture tool, simply select the tool and then drag your finger across the screen in the direction needed for the game. Using a pinch technique with two fingers can also be used for zooming in and out on a game.

New Page

The “New Page” option will allow you to create a new “page” of mappings. This allows you to have multiple sets of mappings for each title.

“Remove Page” will do exactly as it states and remove the current page from the available pages.

Set as Default Page

This option will set the current page as the default mapping for that app. Even if you restart your SHIELD, the current mapping will always be the default.

Share, Email, Rate, and Download Mappings

The Gamepad Mapper sharing menu can be accessed by touching the android sharing icon in the Gamepad Mapper toolbar. A menu drops down, allowing you to choose from a number of options such as sharing custom-created mappings, email custom-created mappings, and rating pages.

If Gmail is selected, an email will be created with the custom mapping included as an attachment.

When a mapper file is received via Gmail, the user selects the attachment and imports it. The import saves automatically on SHIELD and the imported profile will sync up with the game and just work.

Rate Mapping

Community mapping profiles can be rated. To rate a profile, make sure that it has been successfully imported, open the menu, and select “Rate mapping.”


Click on “Rate mapping” to add a 1-5 star rating for the current profile. Add in additional notes below.


Tap “Submit” when complete.

You can download community profiles from the Cloud by clicking the cloud icon shown above.


A window will appear showing community rated profiles from the Gamepad Mapper server.

Click on a profile that you want to download and a message will appear asking you to download the profile. Once you download the profile, a message will appear on SHIELD stating “Import successful!”

Stream With Miracast

Miracast technology provides peer-to-peer, direct wireless connectivity between SHIELD and Smart TVs with Miracast technology built into them. Separate Miracast receivers are available for TVs that do not contain this support. Miracast certified devices connect with each other directly, without the mediation of a wireless access point.

When connecting, SHIELD assumes the role of the source (transmitting device) and the TV becomes a “sink device” that receives the video and application content. The NVIDIA Miracast architecture draws on NVIDIA’s experience in 3D graphics and video processing, and is comprised of two major components – the multimedia (video/audio) processing block and the industry-compliant wireless display networking stack. The multimedia processing block takes advantage of the Tegra 4 multi-core graphics engine and dedicated hardware video/audio codecs to accelerate the decoding of video content, render graphics surfaces, and perform the final compositing operations before encoding into a H.264 bit stream to be wirelessly transmitted.

Miracast is recommended for watching videos, surfing the web, and using apps. The gaming experience is still being optimised for latency and smoothness.

SHIELD To TV Configuration

This section describes how the Miracast connection process works.

NOTE: Max resolution to the TV supports 720p at 60Hz, and 1080p at 30Hz.

1. Access the Miracast app on SHIELD.

The Miracast settings can be accessed two ways: via the Settings section or by holding the SHIELD button down and selecting Miracast wireless display.

2. Launch Miracast on your TV or Miracast-enabled device.

Follow the instructions for setting up the Miracast device to your TV.

3. The Miracast TV or device will display a pin number when the connection is successful.

4. Enter the pin number in the SHIELD app.

Enter the Miracast pin into the invitation to connect screen.

5. When the pin is accepted the process will complete and Miracast streaming will begin.

6. When you want to end Miracast streaming, press the SHIELD button and select "Stop streaming".

To stop Miracast streaming, simply select it either through the Settings menu or by hitting the NVIDIA SHIELD button.
