SHIELD October Software Update Released

SHIELD software updates

When you receive a software update for your Android device, it usually includes a few bug fixes, and maybe an updated app. When NVIDIA issues software updates for SHIELD, the ultimate gaming and entertainment portable, we go all out, launching brand new features, extending the functionality of existing features, and further revolutionizing the handheld gaming experience.

Today NVIDIA SHIELD users will receive our most substantial software update yet, bringing new features and capabilities to the planet’s most powerful entertainment handheld. Below, we detail each feature, so keep on reading.

When SHIELD launched back in July, the ability to stream PC games from your desktop to SHIELD was lauded by critics, even though the feature was still in beta. With this latest software update, PC Streaming exits beta and officially becomes GAMESTREAM.

NVIDIA GAMESTREAM technology brings the ultimate GeForce gaming experience from your PC to the palm of your hands. Now officially supporting over fifty of the best PC games, including AAA holiday releases such as Batman: Arkham Origins and Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.

GAMESTREAM technology enhances image quality and smoothness of streamed PC games by upgrading the stream output from 30 frames per second to a silky-smooth 60 frames per second. This results in a smoother, more eye-catching experience on SHIELD’s 5” HD multi-touch display.

GAMESTREAM technology further improves transmission of data from PC to SHIELD when streaming. We’ve optimised our streaming code and further reduced latency – the delay between pressing a button on SHIELD and seeing the action occur in-game. And we’ve also worked closely with industry-leading network partners to optimize over a dozen new GAMESTREAM ready 5GHz Wi-Fi routers, signifying their ability to flawlessly stream content to and from PCs and SHIELD. Through testing in our labs, NVIDIA has found that 5GHz routers deliver the best experience and least amount of interference for PC streaming. For a complete list of 5GHz GAMESTREAM ready routers, head here. To see if your PC is ready for GAMESTREAM, install GeForce Experience and click on the My Rig tab.

Console Mode: Gaming On The Big Screen

Console Mode is a brand new feature that allows you to experience SHIELD on the Big Screen at full HD 1080p. Hook up your SHIELD to your HDTV (using an HDMI to mini HDMI cable) and sync a wireless Bluetooth controller to the system, and you can immediately enjoy your favourite Android games, browse the web, and listen to music on your TV at 1080p at 60 frames per second. You can also GAMESTREAM your favourite PC games in 720p at 60 fps and even watch your favourite movies at up to 4K resolution on next-gen 4K TVs, all from the comfort of your sofa.

There are a number of Bluetooth controllers out in the market, but we recommend the Nyko PlayPad Pro as it works right out of the box, and has the ability to receive firmware updates for further optimisations. We’re working closely with Nyko to deliver the best experience, and will have more to share with you shortly.

Gamepad Mapper: Hundreds Of New Android Games For SHIELD

Another new feature is Gamepad Mapper, which allows you to map an endless library of touch-based games to SHIELD’s console-grade controller, giving you a more immersive gaming experience. For example, NBA Jam only supports touch-based controls, but with SHIELD’s Gamepad Mapper, you can link the native on-screen controls to SHIELD’s analog sticks and action buttons, enabling you to enjoy one of Android’s most popular games on SHIELD.

Today, Gamepad Mapper includes hundreds of game profiles for the most popular Android games; however, we will continue to add more game profiles every week. If your favourite Android game misses the cut, worry not, you can create custom profiles through an easy-to-use game configuration overlay, and share it with us at or directly with your friends to their email address.

Expand your Storage: Move App & Game Files To Your Micro SD Card

SHIELD now allows you to quickly and easily transfer game .apk and .obb files to your SD card, freeing up SHIELD’s internal memory for important files that can’t be offloaded to external storage. Please note that this functionality is not compatible with all games and apps. Only apps that developers have opted in as moveable to external storage can be moved.

Android Update: The Latest Jelly Bean 4.3 OS

SHIELD receives the latest in Android technology. Your SHIELD will be updated to the latest Jelly Bean 4.3, Android OS. If you use a custom ROM, please be aware that you’ll need 4.3 or a ROM based on 4.3 to use PC Game Streaming 1.0, Console Mode, Gamepad Mapper, and SD Card File Moving.

This software update greatly enhances the features and capabilities of the ultimate gaming and entertainment handheld, and exemplifies NVIDIA’s commitment to bringing more value to gamers through software updates. With GAMESTREAM technology, streaming PC games is now better than ever, Console Mode gives you new ways to enjoy your games and media, and Gamepad Mapper expands SHIELD’s gaming library by taking advantage of thousands of popular touch-based games.

Boot up your SHIELD and you’ll be prompted to download the latest Software Update, giving you access to these new functions and features.
