Released in 2001, Max Payne became an instant hit with PC gamers thanks to its groundbreaking graphics and controllable ‘bullet time’ mechanic, successfully replicating the slow-mo shooting action of The Matrix in a video game format. Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne refined the formula two years later, but unfortunately for fans developer Remedy Entertainment moved onto Alan Wake, leaving the series in limbo.

Thankfully, Rockstar Games rescued the license, putting Max Payne 3 into development at Rockstar Vancouver. Picking up some eight years after the events of Max Payne 2, the eponymous Max has left New York and the NYPD, and finds himself in São Paulo, Brazil, protecting a wealthy family. As is Max’s luck, things go very wrong very quickly, and so begins a new tale of revenge, rescue and redemption.

Max Payne 1 and 2 were technology showcases, and Max Payne 3 is set to continue that tradition with industry-leading physics, advanced destruction, incredible animation, and a number of other niceties. Chief amongst those are the DirectX 11-powered visual effects, and accompanying tessellation, which greatly increases the level of detail seen on characters and the environment. Also on tap is advanced Ambient Occlusion, creating richer, more realistic shadowing.

As mentioned, Max Payne 3 features an incredible animation system that sees characters moving through the environment realistically, stepping over obstacles, walking correctly down stairs, and brushing aside scene elements as they sprint forward, all guns blazing.
