For our first fight partner we have spec'd a budget-conscious PC gaming rig that still packs a punch but without KO'ing your bank account. We have not sacrificed quality or reliability in any way, so while you may find even cheaper components, you may well discover that they're unreliable and poorly made, costing you more in the long run. Based on our Optimal Playable Settings and other benchmarks we knew that playing Crysis 2 with maximum detail settings enabled at 1920x1080 was a realistic goal for a balanced entry level gaming PC, but as other recent games aren't as optimized we had to set our sights on achieving fluid frame rates at 1680x1050 instead.

A brand new, second generation Sandy Bridge Intel Core i3 processor pumps at the heart of our machine and can be easily overclocked to 4GHz utilising the excellent Artic Cooling Freezer Pro heat sink and fan combo (overclocks on the latest Intel CPUs are trivially easy). Through our research we discovered that Ebuyer was the best set up to supply the range of components required to build this gaming PC at the best overall price.

The Asus P7H55-M motherboard we chose isn't the cheapest available, but it does enable you to reach the aforementioned overclock using the Asus Turbo V feature, and is proven to be a solid, well-made piece of kit. If your budget requires it, there are cheaper boards available, but do remember that you get what you pay for.

Powering our graphics subsystem is the significantly overclocked Gainward GTX 550 Ti, a custom-made NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti graphics card equipped with numerous unique components that enable the aforementioned 10% overclock. There are cheaper, older graphics cards that can run Crysis 2 at our desired resolution and speed, but in other games they would struggle hideously.

Gainward NVIDIA GeForce GTX550TI Golden Sample

The PSU is one area where you cannot scrimp or cut corners – cheaper power supplies often have a reputation for going bang, if they take out some of your other components in the process that damage will not be covered by your warranty and the few pounds you saved will be in vein. It is therefore better to spend more in this one particular area to ensure the overall stability and longevity of your system. For this system we've chosen a CX Series PSU, sporting a rock solid 500 Watts of power. Designed by Corsair, a well-known and highly revered company, you can be sure that your system is safe, and the price doesn't break the bank either.

For RAM, we've chosen a paired 4GB kit from Kingston, another well-known, reputable company. 4GB is the recommended amount of RAM for a gaming PC system, especially since the release of Windows 7 and it will also ensure that you can run multiple applications without slowdown. For our hard disk, we went with a modest but fast 1 Terra Byte Caviar Blue drive from Western Digital, which should provide more than enough room for the latest PC games and give you the extra space to save you buying a second drive at a later date (the price of the 1TB drive over the 500GB version was around £17 and to buy another 500GB in 6 months' time would have cost you an additional £40). Rounding out the list of components is a value busting DVD/RW drive, which again only cost a few more pounds than a DVD ROM.

Antec 300 Three Hundred CaseIf you can afford £49 we recommend you buy the Antec Three Hundred case, again there are cheaper cases out there but once purchased this case will see you through years of upgrades. With room for a Standard ATX motherboard, the Three Hundred will easily fit the Asus Micro-ATX motherboard and future proof your system should you wish to upgrade to a more featured-packed motherboard at a later date.

The cable routing is all catered for, allowing you to create a clean, clutter-free interior, and there are numerous bays for further expansion of your DVD or hard drives. On the exterior, the Three Hundred sports two top-mounted USB 2.0 ports, and a headphone and microphone jack (great for headsets). If you require an operating system, we suggest you pick up Windows 7 64-bit for an unbeatable £70.88, but if you're a student ask around campus as you can get deeply discounted versions through your school or university. Also, don't fret not getting the latest revision - it simply means you need to download the most up to date Service Pack after your install is complete.

Unlike our first-time-out entry level machine from Ebuyer, this PC gaming rig from Dabs can comfortably handle the latest PC games at 1920x1080 and offers plenty of options for upgrading in the future. If you are looking for a powerful machine to mash the competition and keep you in the gaming ring then look no further. To power the graphics subsystem we've picked one of the best mid-range GPUs on the market, the Asus NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 810MHz graphics card, a slightly modified, overclocked version of NVIDIA's recently-released GeForce GTX 560 and like the GTX 460 before it, this GPU is all about performance Vs. £££s.

Asus NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 810MHz 1GB PCI-Express

The CPU has been upgraded to a second-generation, mid-range 3.1GHz Intel Core i5-2400 Sandy Bridge processor. With the aid of our trusty ring man, the mighty Artic Cooling Freezer Pro heat sink and fan – coming in at only £14.99 you cannot afford to not buy it. The i5-2400 will happily reach an overclock of 3.8GHz, but if you want to go higher you'll need to splash out another £20 for the Intel Core i5-2500K. Free from the shackles of Intel's overclocking cap, the 2500K can reach speeds of up to 5.7GHz, though a more realistic air-cooled target would be 4.5GHz.

Through our research we discovered that Dabs had stock of all components required for this build, not only are they one of the first to market with new products but their levels of availability are nothing short of excellent.

Our chosen motherboard is the Gigabyte Z68MX-UD2H-B3, is one of the most reliable Sandy Bridge motherboards in its price bracket and uses the latest release of this awesome chipset. Built with all the top-end components you'd expect from Gigabyte, the UD2 also sports several USB 3.0 ports, ensuring that any USB 2.0 devices work as quickly as possible, and allowing you to make full use of high-speed USB 3.0 devices as they become commonplace.

The UD2 also supports 2-Way SLI, allowing you to double the power of your PC's graphics subsystem by adding a second GeForce GTX 560 graphics card at a later date.

Antec 300 Three Hundred Case The more powerful components necessitate a more powerful PSU, so we've chosen the rock-solid Corsair 750 Watt TX EnthusiastSeries, which also supports NVIDIA SLI, should you wish to perform the aforementioned upgrade at a later date. Our chosen RAM is also very special and comes from Corsair again, the Vengeance memory is an 8GB kit (2x 4GB modules) so is double the capacity of the memory in our first system and with 1600MHz chips really keep things moving. The brand of the hard drive remains unchanged but the cache has doubled from 32MB to 64MB, this will help get data on and off of the drive faster.

The case and the rest of the components mirror the excellent selection found in our entry level system so will perform fantastically at this level and deliver jaw shattering performance.

Our high end slugger has been sourced exclusively from Overclockers and is a significant step up, it will play every PC game with every bell and whistle enabled at max resolution on a single monitor. Accelerating the graphics subsystem is the award winning MSI GeForce 580GTX Twin Frozr II/OC graphics card, supported by an Intel Core i7-2600K Sandy Bridge CPU, this combo will ensure this system remains at the top of its game for several years to come.

MSI NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580 800MHz Twin FroR II 1536MB PCI-Express

The more powerful a PC gaming system, the more necessary there is to have a rock-solid PSU that supplies a constant, clean and stable current. To that end, we chose the Corsair HX Series 850, an 850 Watt PSU which has enough juice left over to support extra hard drives and other add-ons whilst also supporting SLI. It's debatable whether 850 Watts would be enough for a SLI GTX 580 system, if you know for sure that you want another GTX 580 graphics card in the future, spend the extra cash now to purchase a 1000 Watt PSU that will safeguard against blown fuses and fried hardware. A system calling for too much power from a PSU that's clearly not rated or able to meet the demand only ends in tears before bedtime and the smell of chargrilled silicone.

The Core i7-2600K is Intel's fastest overall CPU to date, because it is unlocked and overclockable like the Mid-Range Masher's alternate CPU, the Core i5-2500K. The 2600K can be pushed to 5GHz with little difficulty. To guarantee that the CPU doesn't catch fire when pushing such a large overclock, we're cooling it with the industry-leading Corsair Hydro H60 Water-cooled "Closed" CPU Cooler. If you have no intention of overclocking you could purchase cheaper heat sink and fan.

For our high-end motherboard we stuck with the new Intel Z68 chipset but this time moved it up a gear with the Gigabyte GA-Z68-UD7, a massive step up from the UD2H that powered our mid-range system. With more technologies and upgrades than you can shake a SATA cable at, the UD7 is the range topping motherboard from Gigabyte and a truly serious bit of kit. This board will help you easily attain 5GHz without batting an electronic eyelid and run the rest of your system to the max with ease.

Cooler Master CM-690 II Nvidia Edition Advanced Dominator CaseOur RAM is now faster also, and whilst there's still 8GB of capacity the latency has been significantly lowered from CAS 9 to CAS7 to service max settings in some of the more demanding games, and to give you enough extra to do intensive movie and photo editing. Similarly, the hard drive capacity has been doubled to make room for all the extra content you will amass.

One radical change for our high-end PC gaming system is the choice of case, the Coolermaster CM-690 II NVIDIA Edition. Whilst it costs almost double the price of the Antec used in our previous two systems, the CM-690 is worth every penny, with the extra interior space, a nice design and triple graphics brackets for 3-Way SLI configuration, as supported by the Gigabyte UD7 motherboard. Slug it out!!

Our pièce de résistance is the Mama Says Knock You Out of rigs, designed to do everything at once, without question or compromise. Thanks to the raw power and multiple video outputs of the GeForce GTX 590 graphics card, our Extreme PC gaming system can happily play the latest tessellated, PhysX hardware accelerated, DirectX 11 PC games on three 1080p monitors, simultaneously and all in glorious NVIDIA 3D Vision. Our CPU and cooling system remains unchanged, as does our Gigabyte UD7 motherboard simply because they really are the best you can get, whilst there are more advanced Sandy Bridge motherboards out there, our UD7 is simple and uncluttered, with 24 Phase power circuitry and ultra-reliable dual BIOS technology you need look no further.

Zotac NVIDIA GeForce GTX 590 3GB PCI-Express

We opted to buy the components from Scan Computers for this build as they are not only killer on price, boast one of the widest selections of components in the UK but they are also unrivalled when it comes to customer service tech support. When you are building a rig this complex you need to have someone in your corner should you get stuck – for us that has to be Scan.

To support the GTX 590 and our other kit, the power supply has been bumped to a 1200 Watt Corsair Pro Series 1200W Modular SLI Ready PSU, though if you intend to create a Quad SLI system with a second GTX 590, go for a 1500 Watt PSU instead, such as the Silverstone ST1500.

As this is an Extreme gaming PC build we've gone wild and gifted the system with 16GB of RAM. Sure, 8GB would suffice, but if you're building a computer this powerful you're surely going to be running three MMO clients simultaneously, whilst also encoding home movies and editing in Photoshop. In all seriousness, there is logic behind this decision – the 'sweet spot' for the amount of RAM increases every few years, and as this system will last a very long time indeed, we're sure that figure will rise before our build becomes obsolete. The chosen Corsair Vengeance kits are designed for maximum heat dissipation so that optimal performance is maintained at all times, especially when the power is cranked up.

Our hard drive config is now set up for ultra-high-performance, two 10,000rpm Western Digital Raptors in RAID 0 have been selected for killer storage performance. We could not stop there, sure you will struggle to find a faster option for large data storage but it is just not enough for us. No, we decided that the primary system drive should be a solid state disk or SSD, so we have used an OZC Vertex 3 240GB drive, with its 550MBs/sec read speed and 500MB/sec write speed the system will boot in second and ensure games load in a flash (excuse the pun). We'd recommend storing only the most demanding games and the operating system on the SSD, using the Western Digital Raptor drives for everything else, with one partition of RAID array for other system files and games, and the second for everything else.

Corsair Obsidian 700D Black Tower Computer Case Finally, we come to the case - for the Extreme system we've chosen the Corsair Obsidian 800, one of the best Full Tower cases on the market, giving you plenty of room for multiple video cards, additional hot plug hard drives and in our opinion the best cable routing in any case today – It is what my PC at home is built into and for good reason, it rocks.

So there you have it, if you want a gaming PC system to conquer the world, destroy your enemy and dominate your opponent with crushing performance this is the system for you. No matter what your budget all of our systems in this selection represent the best technology available today, at the best prices from the best resellers in the UK.

Now all you have to do is buy it and build it.

Game On, The NVIDIA Team!!
